Liver Biopsy

A liver biopsy is a diagnostic procedure in which a small piece of liver tissue is removed and examined under a microscope to identify liver diseases and conditions. It is performed by a hepatologist or a skilled interventional radiologist in a sterile procedure room. At Sterling Hospitals Ahmedabad, we have state-of-the-art facilities and experienced medical professionals who perform liver biopsies using the latest techniques and equipment to ensure accurate and safe results.

Indications: A liver biopsy may be recommended to diagnose liver diseases such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, fatty liver disease, autoimmune liver disease, and liver cancer. It may also be recommended to monitor the progression of a liver disease, assess the effectiveness of a treatment, or identify the cause of unexplained liver function abnormalities.

Preparation: Before the procedure, your doctor will provide detailed instructions on how to prepare for the biopsy. You may be asked to avoid eating or drinking anything for a certain period before the biopsy. You will also need to inform your doctor about any medications you are taking, especially blood thinners, as they may need to be temporarily stopped before the procedure.

Procedure: During the procedure, you will be given a local anesthetic to numb the area where the biopsy will be taken. The doctor will then use a needle to remove a small piece of liver tissue, which is then sent to a laboratory for analysis. The entire procedure usually takes about 30 minutes.

After the procedure, you will be monitored for a few hours to check for any complications such as bleeding, pain, or infection. You will also be advised to avoid strenuous physical activity for a few days and to avoid taking blood-thinning medications for a period of time.

At Sterling Hospitals Ahmedabad, we prioritize patient safety and comfort. Our medical professionals are highly trained and experienced in performing liver biopsies, ensuring that our patients receive the best possible care.
