  • What are the types of anaesthesia?  

There are three main types of anaesthesia:  

  • General anaesthesia 

  • Regional anaesthesia 

  • Local anaesthesia.  

General anaesthesia is used for procedures that require the patient to be unconscious, while regional anaesthesia numbs only a specific part of the body. Local anaesthesia is used for minor procedures, and it numbs only a small area of the body.  

  • How is anaesthesia administered?  

Anaesthesia can be administered through injection, inhalation, or a combination of both. The method of administration depends on the type of anaesthesia and the patient's medical condition.  

  • What are the side effects of general anaesthesia?  

General anaesthesia is commonly safe, but there are some potential side effects, including nausea and vomiting, a sore throat, confusion, and muscle aches. In rare cases, more serious side effects, such as allergic reactions or damage to the vocal cords, may occur.  

  • What should a patient expect after surgery under anaesthesia? 

After surgery, the patient will be monitored in a recovery room until the effect of anaesthesia wears off and patient is vitally stable. Depending on the type of surgery and anaesthesia used, one may experience some pain, nausea, or dizziness. The doctor shall provide you with instructions on how to manage these symptoms and when it is safe to resume normal activities.
